How to Apply for a Driving License in Bangladesh (2026)
Guide Quick Summary
Getting a smart card driving license in Bangladesh is a multi-step process governed by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). You must first secure a learner permit, pass the driving competency exams, and then register for the smart card.
Step 1: Medical Fitness Certificate
Download the official BRTA Medical Certificate form from the BRTA website. Have it completed and signed by a registered MBBS doctor. This certificate is mandatory to apply for the learner permit.
Step 2: Obtain a Learner License
Apply for a Learner License online via the BRTA Service Portal (BSP). Follow our detailed permit guide to complete this. Once approved, print the Learner License, which contains your scheduled test date and venue (usually 2-3 months from the application date).
Step 3: Pass the Competency Tests
On your scheduled exam date, report to the designated BRTA test center with your physical Learner License, NID, and educational certificates. You must pass three sections:
- Written Examination: 20-minute test consisting of basic traffic rules, road signs, and simple engine mechanics (12 marks required out of 20).
- Oral Examination: Checking sign charts, basic engine parts, and traffic regulations.
- Driving Practical Test: Demonstrating control of your vehicle. You will be tested on the zig-zag track, parking, reversing, and general driving logic.
If you pass, the inspector will sign off on your Learner Permit, marking it "PASSED".
Step 4: Apply for Smart Card License
Once you pass, log back into the BSP portal:
- Click Apply for Smart Card Driving License.
- Input your passed exam details.
- Upload scanned copies of your passed Learner Permit, NID, educational certificates, utility bill, and medical form.
- Pay the smart card license fee online.
Smart Card Fee Structure:
- Non-Professional License Fee: BDT 3,756 (valid for 10 years)
- Professional License Fee: BDT 2,300 (valid for 5 years)
Step 5: Biometrics and Card Delivery
After submitting the smart card application, schedule an appointment for biometrics (fingerprints and photo capture) at your local BRTA circle office. You will be issued a temporary paper driving license receipt. You can track card printing status on the BSP portal. Once ready, pick up your smart card from the BRTA office by presenting your temporary receipt.
